March Madness for Duquesne University
Ah, the March madness of college basketball is upon us once again. It is possibly the most exciting month of sports that we have. It seems that everyday, there is something new to talk about. Who beat who? What small college just beat one of the perennial giants? For me, it is quite different this year. I’d like to talk about a small to medium size private Catholic university that did not make the big tournament. Duquesne University, located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, is not usually one of the teams getting a lot of press this time of year. But, this year was a special one for their basketball team. Just three or four years ago, they had a three win season, and the basketball program was sliding downward quickly. But a new coach and a never-say-die attitude brought them back from all of that, and they managed to make the finals of their conference tournament. They played a really good game, but came up about 6 points short of beating Temple University (We’ve all heard of them right?). As a result of their great play in the conference tournament, they received a bid to the National Invitational Tournament, which is a lesser tournament, but gives more teams a chance to play. They were matched up against Virginia Tech University in the first round and lost in double overtime. I watched them play all of these post season games, and believe me when I tell you that they were playing well above themselves at all times. They were simply magnificent, and they should be applauded by all. As for my picks in the big tournament, watch out for Marquette University and Duke University. Have fun b-ball watchers!
